CHOOSING BASKET BASES

There are many crochet basket bases available online, but finding square basket bases can be a bit tricky. Below are some links to the basket bases I recommend for this pattern.

WOODEN BASKET BASES

*PANDAHALL WOODEN BASKET BASES (Used in pattern)*

Set of 4

SIZES INCLUDED: 4”, 6”, 6.7”, and 7.9” (10cm, 15cm, 17cm, and 20cm)

HOLES: 8mm

THICKNESS: .3cm

PRICE: $13.49 for 4

PROS: Good price, uniform look between all the pieces. Seem to always be in stock on Amazon.

CONS: These bases are thin. For these smaller sizes the thickness is appropriate, but any larger and the wood would be too thin for the project. I did also have one of the holes on the corner crack when using a 6.5mm crochet hook for the first round, so I switched to a smaller hook.

SIZES INCLUDED: Various sizes, discounted multi packs also available

HOLES: 8mm or 10mm options

THICKNESS: 1/4”/approximately 6mm

PRICE: Varies between sizes

PROS: Incredible quality, nice wood grain, affordable price, uniform look between all the pieces, and from a local seller.

CONS: These bases are thick. For larger sizes it can be a bit tricky to handle the first round, but they make an extremely durable & higher quality piece.

OTHER SOURCES

If you are shopping for bases from other sources, they should have the following parameters:

SIZE: Any, but with any bases larger than 10”/25cm, the basket starts to lose its shape.

HOLES: 8-10mm, with approximately 5mm space between the holes

THICKNESS: 3mm-6mm

YARN

RIBBON JUMBO BY HOBBII

This yarn is actually a #6 super bulky yarn. The construction is a shoelace style yarn. It can be a bit pricey, but if you purchase several skeins you can get discounted pricing. Hobbii also runs sales occasionally on their yarns.

YARN SUBSTITUTES: Not all ribbon/shoelace/tape style yarns are created equally. Checking gauge before purchasing a yarn substitute is very important. If the yarn you are using for this project is thinner than Ribbon Jumbo by Hobbii your basket will have holes & likely won’t have as much structure to the sides. Some t-shirt yarns could be a good substitute, just be sure to compare the gauge to Ribbon Jumbo by Hobbii before purchasing your yarn.
